In Drupal, a module is an extension of Drupal's functionality. Drupal comes shipped with core code that is needed to run modules, themes, and provide some simple functionality. Beyond that, the shipped version of Drupal is extended by the core modules. All modules are approved by the core developers and community. Third-party modules can expand Drupal further.
